ON NUMERICAL ALGEBRA AND SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING (NASC06)

NASC is an international conference organized by Chinese numerical algebra group starting from 2006. The conference highlights recent advances in theoretical, computational and practical aspects of linear and nonlinear numerical algebra. The aim of the conference is to gather numerical algebra and scientific computing experts to exchange ideas and discuss future developments and trends of these closely related fields.
The topics of NASC06 include, but not limited to:solutions of linear and nonlinear equations;least-squares problems; computations of eigenvalue problems;parallel computations; constructions and analyses of preconditioners; methods and theories of structured matrices;and applications of numerical algebraic techniques and algorithms.

为了活跃西部地区计算数学学术研究气氛,加强西部地区从事计算数学研究人员与全国现代科学计算的专家学者乃至海外从事计算数学的华人青年学者的联系和交流,提高和发展西部地区计算数学的整体学术研究水平,西安交通大学、重庆大学和宁夏大学将于2006年8月9日-13日(8月8日报到)在银川举办上述三会,

2006应用数学与科学计算暑期学校暨研究生精品课程

由北京大学主办的2006应用数学与科学计算暑期学校将于2006年6月1日-8月31日举行,该项目由北京大学研究生院,北京国际数学中心和国家自然科学基金委天元基金共同资助。
此项目创立于2002年,于每年6至8月份在北京举办。是由北京大学长江学者鄂维南教授(美国普林斯顿大学教授)发起,并由北大长江学者张平文教授,清华大学长江学者金石教授以及白峰杉教授共同创建的研究生课程改革项目。学员来自全国20多所高等院校及科研院所。
2006年度的研究生精品课程将开设两门主课,分别是:Mathematical introduction to statistical and quantum mechanics和Introduction to atomistic modeling;有1-2门辅修课程作为补充(Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos和Introduction to Mathematical Biology of Cells)。主课将侧重于具有学科交叉性质的多尺度建模方向。同时进行的研究课题:Multiscale modeling of complex fluids,将由多位海内外从事前沿科学研究的知名学者参与讨论。

庆祝西安交通大学110周年暨迁校50周年校庆
西安交通大学数学学科介绍
西安交通大学数学学科创办于交通大学西迁后的1957年,现有信息与计算科学和数学与应用数学两个本科专业。本学科是国家一级学科博士学位授予权单位,其中计算数学是国家重点学科,应用数学是教育部“长江学者计划”特聘与讲座教授设岗单位,设有数学博士后流动站,该站也是陕西省优秀博士后流动站。数学学科是全国最早设立应用数学专业和计算数学专业的单位之一,其中计算数学专业更是全国最早创办的三所高等院校之一,从60年代起开始培养研究生,1984年获博士学位授予权,也一直是西安交通大学211工程一期与二期重点建设学科。
现在学科下设有计算数学系,应用数学系,信息科学系,金融统计系,基础数学系,工科数学部。设有国家工科数学课程教学基地,也有以数学学科为依托的《西安交通大学基础科学研究中心》,其前身为陈省身先生亲自倡导并亲临主持开幕的《西安交通大学应用数学研究中心》。下设有三个科学研究实验室,“智能信息处理与计算实验室”,“信息与计算科学实验室”,“工科基地实验室”,其中“智能信息处理与计算实验室”装配有约300万元的具有62个并行计算结点、124个CPU的联想深腾1800集群系统。本学科拥有一个数学图书资料室,近期,将投资逾50万进一步建设该资料室。
全学科有教职员工101名,50岁以下的占81%, 其中国家教学名师1名,教育部“长江”特聘教授与讲座教授3名, 教育部跨世纪优秀人才2名, 西安交通大学“腾飞”特聘教授4名,博士生导师17名,教授29名,副教授34名。 已逐步形成了一支学历层次高, 年龄与知识结构合理, 有发展潜力的教学与研究队伍。截至2005年12月已培养本科毕业生2100余名,授予硕士学位646名,博士学位156名,出站博士后9名。现在校本科生390名,硕士研究生162名,博士研究生101名,博士后12名。本学科的发展注重数学基础,教风严谨,学风朴实。地处西部,直接肩负为中、西部培养计算数学与应用数学高级人才的重任。在长期的发展中,本学科依托所在工科大学的优势,坚持以有重大实际背景的应用数学与计算数学问题为主攻方向,坚持瞄准本学科和现代科学技术前沿展开综合性、交叉性、边缘性研究,坚持以培养理工复合型人才为目标,形成了“特色鲜明、意义重大、应用直接”的一批新兴、交叉学科研究方向。如,偏微分方程理论与现代数值方法;智能计算的数学理论与方法;最优化理论与方法;统计计算与数据分析理论与方法;大型瞬态系统数值模拟的理论与方法;非线性生物动力学、环境污染与流行病动力学等。
近年来本学科发表了大量高水平的学术论文, 其中国际SCI刊物论文每年逐渐增加。 持续获得国家“攀登”计划和重大基础研究“973”项目,“863”高技术项目, 国家自然科学基金重点项目, 国家“211”工程项目,以及国家教育振兴行动计划“985”项目等支持。 也多次获得各类国家级与省部级教学与科研奖。学术交流活动广泛与频繁,经常举办国内与国际会议。出国参加国际会议、访问、进修人数逐年增加,有多种稳定的国际合作渠道。
在保持本学科已有方向特色、优势与领先水平的基础上,力争在更多研究方向上达到国际先进水平。将以实施面向21世纪教育振兴行动计划为契机,以着力培养和选聘一批应用数学与计算数学优秀青年学者和学科带头人为重点,形成在理论上有一个高度,应用上有一个落脚点的发展模式。进一步加大以提高创新素质为目标的教育过程改革与优化,加强基础,不断提高研究生培养质量,在新时代继续将本学科建设成承担国家主要相关基础研究的基地和培养中西部地区优秀数学人才的积聚地。

Researchers working in dedicated disciplines can also find add-on modules that have special user interfaces and optimized application setups; currently available are the Chemical Engineering, Earth Science, Electromagnetics, Heat Transfer, MEMS and Structural Mechanics Modules.
A related package, the COMSOL Reaction Engineering Lab, allows users to enter chemical formulas and immediately see the reaction kinetics and thermodynamics.
Another product in the family is COMSOL Script, an interactive scripting language that works both as a general-purpose scientific computational tool and that also runs within COMSOL Multiphysics to automate tasks such as parametric studies and create customized user interfaces.
All this software is available for the Windows, Linux, Solaris, and the Macintosh operating systems.

Announcement of Summer Short Course 2006

We are very glad to announce the launch of our second summer short course on high performance cluster computing (Summer Short Course 2006). The short course will be hosted by the High Performance Cluster Computing Centre (HPCCC) of Hong Kong Baptist University from Aug. 7 to Aug. 9.
During the 3-day short course, each attendee will a) learn the basic information and components about the cluster facility; b) master the fundamental techniques in using the cluster computer; c) get the first hand experience in using the cluster technology; and d) be exposed to several scientific applications of cluster computing. A certificate will be issued for each attendee upon completion.

Postdoctoral position in the Department of Mathematics at Hong Kong Baptist University
The Centre for Mathematical Imaging and Vision at the Department of Mathematics, Hong Kong Baptist University expects to make a post-doctoral appointment for two years beginning in the summer of 2006. The appointment will be in the area of image processing and computer vision.
The research interests of the Centre include image processing, computer vision, image analysis and retrieval, and numerical methods and optimization for imaging and vision applications.
Applicants must have demonstrated abilities in conducting independent research and publishing research results in journals of international level.
