New AMS Prize: The Chevalley Prize in Lie Theory

来源:AMS网站

The Chevalley Prize in Lie Theory, established by George Lusztig, recognizes notable work in Lie Theory published during the preceding six years. The US$8000 prize will be awarded in even-numbered years, with the first award being made in 2016.

Lusztig established the prize in 2014 to honor Claude Chevalley(1909–1984), a founding member of the Bourbaki group. He made fundamental contributions to class field theory, algebraic geometry, and group theory. Chevalley’s three-volume treatise on Lie groups served as standard reference for many decades. His classification of semisimple groups over an arbitrary algebraically closed field provides a link between Lie's theory of continuous groups and the theory of finite groups, to the enormous enrichment of both subjects.

The Chevalley Prize in Lie Theory is awarded without restriction on society membership, citizenship, or venue of publication. A recipient should be at most 25 years past the PhD. The nomination deadline for the 2016 prize is June 30, 2015.
