KADIR AZIZ
Kadir Aziz, an emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC),passed away on March 25, 2016 at the age of 92.
Born in Afghanistan in 1923, Kadir served on the faculty of Georgetown University, before moving to UMBC in 1967 as one of the founding senior faculty members. There, in 1972, he co-organized the very first international conference on the mathematical theory of the finite element method. The proceedings, which he edited, and which contained an influential monograph written by Ivo Babuska and him, went on to become a standard reference in the field, and a stimulus for future development.
Throughout his career, Kadir was an active and highly respected member of the numerical analysis community at the University of Maryland. In 1999, he donated funds to establish a series of expository lectures on differential equations and their numerical analysis. Initially organized at UMBC, the Aziz Lecture Series now brings two distinguished mathematicians each year to the University of Maryland, College Park.
A memorial service for Kadir will be held on Saturday, May 28, 1 p.m. at 10520 Montrose Avenue in Bethesda,MD, 20814. If you are interested in attending, please contact Rouben Rostamian, rostamian@umbc.edu, for more information.
