Hermite methods, as introduced by Goodrich et al. in [15], combine Hermite interpolation and staggered (dual) grids to produce stable high order accurate schemes for the solution of hyperbolic PDEs. We introduce three variations of this Hermite method which do not involve time evolution on dual grids. Computational evidence is presented regarding stability, high order convergence, and dispersion/dissipation properties for each new method. Hermite methods may also be coupled to discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for additional geometric flexibility [4]. An example illustrates the simplification of this coupling for Hermite methods.

For gas flows with moderate and low Knudsen numbers, pair-wise collisions in the Boltzmann equation can be approximated by the Langevin model corresponding to the Fokker-Planck equation. Using this simplified collision model, particle numerical schemes, e.g. the Fokker-Planck model (FPM) method, can simulate low Knudsen number gas flows more efficient than those based on the Boltzmann equation, such as the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. However, as analyzed in this paper, the transport properties of the FPM method deviate from the physical values as the time step increases, and this problem affects its computational accuracy and efficiency for the simulation of multi-scale flows. Here we propose a particle Fokker-Planck algorithm with multiscale temporal discretization (MTD-FPM) to overcome the drawbacks of the original FPM method. In the MTD-FPM method, the molecular motion is tracked following the integration scheme of the Langevin model in analogy to the original FPM method. However, to ensure consistent transport coefficients for arbitrary temporal discretization, a time step dependent friction coefficient has been implemented. Several benchmark problems, including Couette, thermal Couette, Poiseuille, and Sod tube flows, are simulated to validate the proposed MTD-FPM method.

In this work, we investigate the numerical approximation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations under the framework of discontinuous Galerkin methods. For discretization of the viscous and heat fluxes, we extend and apply the symmetric direct discontinuous Galerkin (SDDG) method which is originally introduced for scalar diffusion problems. The original compressible Navier-Stokes equations are rewritten into an equivalent form via homogeneity tensors. Then, the numerical diffusive fluxes are constructed from the weak formulation of primal equations directly without converting the second-order equations to a first-order system. Additional numerical flux functions involving the jump of second order derivative of test functions are added to the original direct discontinuous Galerkin (DDG) discretization. A number of numerical tests are carried out to assess the practical performance of the SDDG method for the two dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. These numerical results obtained demonstrate that the SDDG method can achieve the optimal order of accuracy. Especially, compared with the well-established symmetric interior penalty (SIP) method [18], the SDDG method can maintain the expected optimal order of convergence with a smaller penalty coefficient.

Almost all schemes existed in the literature to solve the Lattice Boltzmann Equation like stream & collide, finite difference, finite element, finite volume schemes are explicit. However, it is known fact that implicit methods utilizes better stability and faster convergence compared to the explicit methods. In this paper, a method named herein as Implicit Finite Volume Lattice Boltzmann Method (IFVLBM) for incompressible laminar and turbulent flows is proposed and it is applied to some 2D benchmark test cases given in the literature. Alternating Direction Implicit, an approximate factorization method is used to solve the obtained algebraic system. The proposed method presents a very good agreement for all the validation cases with the literature data. The proposed method shows good stability characteristics, the CFL number is eased. IFVLBM has about 2 times faster convergence rate compared with Implicit-Explicit Runge Kutta method even though it possesses a computational burden from the solution of algebraic systems of equations.

Phase-field methods with a degenerate mobility have been widely used to simulate surface diffusion motion. However, apart from the motion induced by surface diffusion, adverse effects such as shrinkage, coarsening and false merging have been observed in the results obtained from the current phase-field methods, which largely affect the accuracy and numerical stability of these methods. In this paper, a flux-corrected phase-field method is proposed to improve the performance of phase-field methods for simulating surface diffusion. The three effects were numerically studied for the proposed method and compared with those observed in the two existing methods, the original phase-field method and the profile-corrected phase-field method. Results show that compared to the original phase-field method, the shrinkage effect in the profile-corrected phase-field method has been significantly reduced. However, coarsening and false merging effects still present and can be significant in some cases. The flux-corrected phase field performs the best in terms of eliminating the shrinkage and coarsening effects. The false merging effect still exists when the diffuse regions of different interfaces overlap with each other. But it has been much reduced as compared to that in the other two methods.

Vortex and vorticity are two correlated but fundamentally different concepts which have been the central issues in fluid mechanics research. Vorticity has rigorous mathematical definition (curl of velocity), but no clear physical meaning. Vortex has clear physical meaning (rotation) but no rigorous mathematical definition. For a long time, many people treat them as a same thing. However, based on our high-order direct numerical simulation (DNS), we found that first, "vortex" is not "vorticity tube" or "vortex tube" which is widely defined as a bundle of vorticity lines without any vorticity line leak. Actually, vortex is an open area for vorticity line penetration. Second, vortex is not necessarily congregation of vorticity lines, but dispersion in many 3-dimensional cases. Some textbooks say that vortex cannot end inside the flow field but must end on the solid wall (and/or boundaries). Our DNS observation and many other numerical results show almost all vortices are ended inside the flow field. Finally, a more theoretical study shows that neither vortex nor vorticity line can attach to the solid wall and they must be detached from the wall.

This study makes the first attempt to accelerate the singular boundary method (SBM) by the precorrected-FFT (PFFT) for large-scale three-dimensional potential problems. The SBM with the GMRES solver requires $\mathcal{O}$($N^2$) computational complexity, where N is the number of the unknowns. To speed up the SBM, the PFFT is employed to accelerate the SBM matrix-vector multiplication at each iteration step of the GMRES. Consequently, the computational complexity can be reduced to $\mathcal{O}$($N$log$N$). Several numerical examples are presented to validate the developed PFFT accelerated SBM (PFFT-SBM) scheme, and the results are compared with those of the SBM without the PFFT and the analytical solutions. It is clearly found that the present PFFT-SBM is very efficient and suitable for 3D large-scale potential problems.

The Shan-Chen multiphase lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) coupled with Carnahan-Starling real-gas equation of state (C-S EOS) was proposed to simulate three-dimensional (3D) cavitation bubbles. Firstly, phase separation processes were predicted and the inter-phase large density ratio over 2×10⁴ was captured successfully. The liquid-vapor density ratio at lower temperature is larger. Secondly, bubble surface tensions were computed and decreased with temperature increasing. Thirdly, the evolution of creation and condensation of cavitation bubbles were obtained. The effectiveness and reliability of present method were verified by energy barrier theory. The influences of temperature, pressure difference and critical bubble radius on cavitation bubbles were analyzed systematically. Only when the bubble radius is larger than the critical value will the cavitation occur, otherwise, cavitation bubbles will dissipate due to condensation. According to the analyses of radius change against time and the variation ratio of bubble radius, critical radius is larger under lower temperature and smaller pressure difference condition, thus bigger seed bubbles are needed to invoke cavitation. Under higher temperature and larger pressure difference, smaller seed bubbles can invoke cavitation and the expanding velocity of cavitation bubbles are faster. The cavitation bubble evolution including formation, developing and collapse was captured successfully under various pressure conditions.

This paper describes an adaptive preconditioner for numerical continuation of incompressible Navier–Stokes flows based on Stokes preconditioning [42] which has been used successfully in studies of pattern formation in convection. The preconditioner takes the form of the Helmholtz operator I−∆tL which maps the identity (no preconditioner) for ∆t ≪ 1 to Laplacian preconditioning for ∆t ≫ 1. It is built on a first order Euler time-discretization scheme and is part of the family of matrix-free methods. The preconditioner is tested on two fluid configurations: three-dimensional doubly diffusive convection and a two-dimensional projection of a shear flow. In the former case, it is found that Stokes preconditioning is more efficient for ∆t = $\mathcal{O}$(1), away from the values used in the literature. In the latter case, the simple use of the preconditioner is not sufficient and it is necessary to split the system of equations into two subsystems which are solved simultaneously using two different preconditioners, one of which is parameter dependent. Due to the nature of these applications and the flexibility of the approach described, this preconditioner is expected to help in a wide range of applications.

In this paper, we study an exponential time differencing method for solving the gauge system of incompressible viscous flows governed by Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations. The momentum equation is decoupled from the kinematic equation at a discrete level and is then solved by exponential time stepping multistep schemes in our approach. We analyze the stability of the proposed method and rigorously prove that the first order exponential time differencing scheme is unconditionally stable for the Stokes problem. We also present a compact representation of the algorithm for problems on rectangular domains, which makes FFT-based solvers available for the resulting fully discretized system. Various numerical experiments in two and three dimensional spaces are carried out to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the proposed method.

A domain decomposition based spectral collocation method is proposed for numerically solving Lane-Emden equations, which are frequently encountered in mathematical physics and astrophysics. Compared with the existing methods, this method requires less computational cost and is particularly suitable for long-term computation. The related error estimates are also established, indicating the spectral accuracy of the method. The numerical performance and efficiency of the method are illustrated by several numerical experiments.

The paper presents a novel family of arbitrary high order multioperators approximations for convection, convection-diffusion or the fluid dynamics equations. As particular cases, the 16th- and 32nd-order skew-symmetric multioperators for derivatives supplied by the 15th- and 31st-order dissipation multioperators are described. Their spectral properties and the comparative efficiency of the related schemes in the case of smooth solutions are outlined. The ability of the constructed conservative schemes to deal with discontinuous solutions is investigated. Several types of nonlinear hybrid schemes are suggested and tested against benchmark problems.
